Triggering footsteps in Wwise, without animations.

I'm from an audio background and only have a rudimentary understanding of scripting in Unity. I know how to trigger individual one-off events, such as jumping and landing, but am having trouble getting a repeating footstep trigger to work. My scene is played in first person, with a capsule object representing the player, and so has no animations to tie footstep events to. What would be the best method to send individual footstep events to Wwise to trigger the footstep sounds? I want to play footsteps at a certain rate while the player is grounded and walking, at a higher rate when running, and perhaps a final step sound on releasing the movement key. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
